The age of a Warhammer 40k Tech Priest is upon us! Praise to the Machine God.

Just, without the aliens, space travel, or mech-suits.

Got half the other downsides though!

More on the upcoming priesthood and monasteries: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49743400

What a fantastic article! Thank you for sharing it!

A Tech Priest is way smarter than any software developer you could ever think of.

Your joke overestimates the intelligence of real life humans.

> A Tech Priest is way smarter than any software developer you could ever think of.

https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Tech-Priest:

> Despite the never-ending thirst for knowledge of all branches of the order, most Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus have lost the ability to innovate or carry out basic scientific research.

> No longer the master of its creations, the Cult Mechanicus is enslaved to the past. It maintains the glories of yesteryear with rite, dogma and edict instead of true discernment and comprehension.

> For instance, even the theoretically simple process of activating a vehicle's engine is preceded by the application of ritual oils, the burning of sacred resins and the chanting of long and complex hymns.

What if those chants are prompts? "Make no mistakes", "My Grandma used to love this", "fix this and don't break anything else". Sometimes you have to keep chanting for a while until you get the results.

There are sources claiming AI is Abominable Intelligence and something completely different from the Machine Spirit. But it seems to me that this is how it feels to be a tech priest.

You’re not alone, I’ve been keen for something like this for a while.

It’s fine to keep apprised of, but I really do miss the actually-genuinely-interesting topics and projects which used to pop up here, pre ai days.

Yeah those games exist, and most gamers don’t want them. We’ve not been able to convince the industry to stop bothering to make them, so they still do dumb stuff like, making Concorde, then realising nobody wants it.

Indie and non-triple-A studios keep having wind, because they’re the ones producing interesting and fun games which people _actually want to play_.

I _want_ to agree, but I fear this is too close to the old “do what you love for work and you’ll never work a day”.

It didn’t lead to a lot of people having a wildly successful career, it lead to a lot of people getting burnt out, exploited, underpaid and generally disillusioned.

There will be a lucky few, who have the benefit of being given the space to work alongside. The vast majority of people will (unless we change things) simply be made to take whatever the machine outputs and call it a day.

If ~~someone gives you a hint about an approach~~ you steal someone’s notes about a promising approach, and then you hire 10,000 people to brute force the problem basically everyone would consider that “shitty behaviour”, “theft”, and “poor form”.

Correct.

That's not interpolation though, that's theft.

Building on them without fundamentally understanding is akin to putting on robes, calling yourself a Tech-Priest, worshipping a machine god and doing your best Warhammer 40k impression.

What do you mean “we won’t need mathematics as it is today”?

To further human understanding is itself a goal that single-handedly justifies our efforts.

Jumping straight to the “answer” and therefore missing both the understanding of the actual problem, and any useful discoveries along the way is a waste at best, and actively harmful at worst.

I'm not the one you replied to, but I think I get their point. If you have a machine that can solve math problems at the push of a button, you don't really need to amass discoveries anymore just in case someone might need it years down the line.

Someone in the thread mentioned Minkowski’s math work being instrumental to Einstein’s physics. If Einstein had had a math machine that can spit out the result at will, he wouldn't have needed Minkowski.

Nevertheless, I also see the opposing point: if Minkowski hadn't already published his results, it's possible Einstein would not have even had the inspiration to derive general relativity from it. I think this is the human aspect most critics are worried about.

Physics alone is more than enough to “further human understanding”. All current mathematicians can move to other sciences, closest being fields in physics, and it will all continue to progress just fine.

I have extraordinarily bad news for you about the state of the environment right now.

East Germany emitted 10x West Germany’s SO2 per km2, USSR drained the Aral Sea for cotton quotas and Mao wrecked forests and harvests. central planning hid the costs but capitalism generates the wealth. with democracy the public forces that wealth into cleaner air and water. That pairing, not central planning is what works in history. The anti-capitalist comments on HN reflect deep failure of the education systems experienced by those with such views. Capitalism is the single greatest force for good in human history. Don’t confuse oligarchy and cronyism for capitalism, those are just different failure states of The State which is the greatest force of evil in human history, most death most destruction most suffering originated from governments. capitalists make lives better, by definition, it’s why you part with your money voluntarily and pay them!

It’s Python, you’ve already sacrificed performance, what a little bit more?

That's the spirit!

(Slightly less silly: the folks at https://github.com/faster-cpython are doing great work, too.)

Are they still? I thought this project was no longer really active.

I'm not actually sure about this specific project, but people are still hard at work making CPython faster. Many of them the same people as where in this project.

Technically correct, but not in a functionally useful way.

The “L” in LLM’s generally refers to human-language specifically. You’d expect to feed it…human text. Nitpicking that the human text also constitutes a mathematical language is like, correct, but so general as to be unhelpful.
