Apparently the Greek word is a loanword from Romanian (which got it from Latin), but what's more interesting is that although we both use it in the literal sense (a tuft or lock of hair, wool, or soft fibers), as a vulgarity we have assigned different meanings: In colloquial Romanian, floci is widely used as a slang term for pubic hair, while in colloquial Greek, floki means semen.
Though now it's long buried in internet folklore graveyard, there once was a popular shock image (and an associated website) called "goatse". (If you never heard of it, you better NOT google it).
For awhile, people had been spotting goatse in several logos.
Arguably the entire flow is just bad UI/UX and Apple should’ve fixed this when they started forcing things to need to be in Applications.
There are a number of apps that check if they’re outside that folder on boot and alert the user to either open the right one or actually install it - I.e they ran it from the mounted DMG.
I am also so tired of walking people through the absolute basic operations for installing stuff this way. If it’s still catching people this many years later, it’s probably worth just changing. Though I suppose Apple predominantly cares about the App Store as an installation channel and any other friction is fine.
I'm a few glasses of wine deep on a long haul flight so I don't remember offhand, but it was far enough back that it was an issue on Catalina - apps would get mounted as read-only (the transliteration problem).
Back when [1] it was fashionable to advocate FOSS as ideology [2], we were thinking about tons of FOSS adversaries and how to protect from them - some real, some imaginary. The death of FOSS would come from big closed-source vendors, or from regulators (lobbied or just ignorant), from whatever.
We never envisioned that the actual FOSS death spiral would come from progress itself, much more so from AI...
